Why Rescue?

Why rescue, you may ask, when you can buy a puppy from a pet store or from a neighbor or friend?

If a neighbor or friend is breeding collies, or any breed, without a great deal of thought about genetics, diseases, health, and safety, then perhaps you need to rethink your friendship. Collies need a great deal of care in breeding. For instance, if you breed two blue merles together, you have the possibility of getting a puppy which is called a ‘Double Dilute’. The merle gene can be dangerous and puppies born with two copies can be born deaf, blind, or both. Some can be born without eyes altogether.

Collies can also have eye and skin problems if not carefully looked out for when breeding. When you rescue a collie, you are providing a home to a wonderful dog which has had a hard history… hard because his first home didn’t work out. Maybe his second, or third home, either. Or maybe he spent time in a shelter, or on the street, and he needs a home to be a part of a family.

So when you are thinking of getting a dog, please consider rescue. If you buy from a pet store, you may be getting a dog that is from a Puppy Mill. Puppy mills are horrible places where dogs are packed into small cages, bred over and over again until their bodies sometimes just give up. Puppies are not socialized and can come with many health and behavioral problems.

If you think “well they need to be rescued too…” yes they do. However, if you are spending your dollars to buy these dogs from pet stores, you are supporting the puppy millers. They will just breed more puppies to make up for the ones you bought. So please please consider rescue, and do not buy from pet stores!

There are soooo many unwanted dogs out there it’s sad! Millions of dogs get killed at pounds every day - including our beloved collies - that i don’t understand why there aren’t more people out there involved in rescue. All those dogs need is a nice peaceful home and a loving owner, but all most of them get are neglect, worms, beatings, and death. :(

Thanks Kevin! I love collies, and all dogs. My husband and I have done all breed fostering for almost 10 years. I just love doing it. And getting to know all the wonderful dogs that come through our house, even if it’s just for a short time.
